‘Tis the season to be…wary. Namely, of package thieves. The holiday season usually sees an uptick of mail theft, given the abundance of gifts, cash, and specialty foods shipped out this time of year.

Comment threads on social media apps like NextDoor are already full of accounts of suspicious strangers walking up to porches, or even following delivery trucks around town, ready for a quick score of someone else’s holiday swag.

Jananina Rager is a community engagement specialist with the Eugene Police Department. She says there are several ways to beat package thieves.

“You could always schedule packages to arrive when you’re home. May cost extra, but you can do that," Rager says.

"Also you could have packages shipped so that the signature is required, that way packages won’t be left if you’re not at home. You could have packages delivered to a trusted friend, family member, neighbor.”

Some companies like Amazon also offer secure pick-up sites, which include lockers.
