INCIWEB UPDATE: As of 8:41am Saturday, the Terwilliger Fire is currently at 8,122 acres, with 633 personnel battling it over steep terrain. It is 23 percent contained.
The main message officials want to get out now ahead of the Labor Day holiday weekend, is that there are campfire bans and restrictions for the Willamette National Forest. Smoking is not allowed either, unless it’s in an enclosed building or vehicle.
Nick Mickel is spokesman for the Terwilliger Fire. He says he’s a bit optimistic crews will gain on it.
“The weather’s favorable for us right now with the cloud cover and the lower temperatures and higher humidity, so…things are looking up but we have a long way to go.”
The fire was first reported August 19th. The cause is still under investigation. Some locals suggest it was started by someone extinguishing a cigarette on a tree stump, but that remains unconfirmed.
