A teen from Eugene has taken her activism on the road. KLCC’s Rachael McDonald spoke with her by phone as she walks across the U.S. in the Great March for Climate Action.
18 year old Kelsey Juliana joined the march last month in Nebraska. She’s been walking about 15 miles a day on a journey that will conclude in November in Washington DC. Juliana says in Nebraska they spoke with people concerned about the Keystone pipeline which would pump oil across their farms. She says there’s alarm about the possibility of oil leaks as well as disruption of the land.
Juliana: “It doesn’t matter if you are a so-called environmentalist or a so-called activist, if you are a farmer or if you are a citizen of Nebraska, this is a huge concern for these people.”
Juliana and her fellow marchers, about 35 to 40 people, are currently walking across Iowa. Illinois is next. Juliana graduated from South Eugene High School in June. She put off enrollment in college to join the march.
