It’s been years in coming. Officials broke ground on a new Veterans health facility in Eugene Monday afternoon.
The site of the future Veterans Health Care Center in North Eugene sits within eye shot of I-5. That’s the same interstate veterans in Lane County now travel long distances on to get health services not provided at the current small clinic in Eugene. Oregon Representative Peter DeFazio spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony.
DeFazio: “This replacement is going to allow us to bring even more specialties and more outpatients here to better serve our Vets, so fewer will have to travel to Roseburg or fewer will have to travel to Portland.”
DeFazio joined Veterans, both of Oregon’s Senators, as well as local officials and Veterans Administration Roseburg Director Carol Bogedain.
Bogedain: “When this clinic is open, it will be everything that a hospital has, except the beds.”
The facility will also offer dental, optometry and a dispensing pharmacy. The new health care center is expected to open in July 2015.
