Lane County Public Health announced Thursday, the number of COVID-19 outbreaks in college-aged people has reduced considerably. Currently, only about 15% of the overall outbreaks in the county are in college-- or 17 to 30-year old-- age groups.
This, while the number of outbreaks in workplaces (at over 25%) and long-term care facilities (at over 40%) have radically increased.
Prior to Thanksgiving, the University of Oregon extended free testing to all students and staff.
Here’s UO spokesperson Kay Jarvis. “It’s important to note that even with the expanded testing numbers, the number of cases associated with the university campus remains lower than Lane County as a whole,” she said. “The UO’s numbers have remained low and relatively stable since late October.”
The first week of classes for winter term, beginning January 4, will be conducted remotely. Jarvis said while students may return to residence halls—staggered testing and remote learning allows them to self-isolate and maintain physical distancing to stay safe.

The University of Oregon’s Monitoring and Assessment Program or MAP will continue to provide free COVID-19 tests for any interested resident—throughout December.
Next week, 2,000 testing slots will be open for appointments beginning Monday, December 7th through Thursday, December 10th.
The testing will be conducted at Matthew Knight Arena unless otherwise announced.
Specific dates and times will be posted online a week in advance. Testing appointments are available on a first come, first served basis.
