A Eugene Church recently broke ground on phase 2 of their housing initiative to help people in need of homes. The project comes a year after the congregation helped change a city land-use code.
The ordinance limited the number of homes that could be built on a property. Now, the First Congregational United Church Of Christ and Reverend Jonathan Morgan are constructing 2 houses for 2 families to live in.
“They will remain in their homes for a year. And receive a number of services from St. Vincent de Paul, Connections Program, and allow them to get on their own. Then 2 more families will come in and go through the same process. So the hope is that through those homes on our property, we’ll be able to affect numerous families in need,” Morgan says.
The congregation raised $200,000 for the initiative, he says. The church expects the homes to be move-in ready in October.
