The Heceta Head Lighthouse, north of Florence, will be closed for repairs in July. The project was funded by donations and Oregon Lottery dollars. KLCC’s Deonna Anderson reports.

The closure will begin on July 1st. And it’s expected to last one month.

The Heceta He ad Lighthouse is said to be one of the most photographed lighthouses in the United States. To maintain that status, Oregon Parks and Recreation will repair several cracked interior metal columns.

Kevin Beck is a manager with the department. He says it’s important to complete the work now. That will ensure the lighthouse doesn’t have problems in the future.

“Right now the structure is sound. It’s stable but what we need to do is get on it as soon as we can,” he says. “That’s why, although we’d prefer not to do something in the summer months, we need to get in and make the repairs to prevent the cracks from spreading.”

The grounds and historic assistant lighthouse keeper’s house, which currently serves as a bed and breakfast, will be open during the closure.
