Newport Urban Renewal Plan Seeking Public Input

City of Newport

The City of Newport is examining two urban renewal plans. One is located near U.S. Highway 20 and 101 near Agate Beach. The other is by the Port of Newport in the McClain Point area. Part of the plan includes providing resources to business owners and residences affected by any changes. Community Development Director Derrick Tokos says community feedback so far has been centered on the City's role in economic development.

Tokos: "And this is one of the key recommendations that came out of there, is the City could really be a driver for putting together an urban renewal district to create some resources to address some of these issues."

Tokos says the there aren't any new proposed taxes to fund the development upgrades. He says financing will be taken out of taxes already collected. The City is seeking public comment on the two proposed urban renewal districts. There's a meeting Monday at 6:00 PM at the Newport City Hall. The public is invited to attend.
