Oregon Governor Kate Brown released her budget Tuesday.
The governor said she hopes it serves as a “north star” as the state tries to rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic, recover from wildfires and address systemic racism.
“We are absolutely determined to rise and rebuild and as we do, we must ensure an equitable future for Oregon where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and every voice is heard, this is where my budget finds its inspiration.” Brown said.
The governor’s more than $25-billion budget carves out money to expand access to housing and education for communities of color and funnels millions into the state’s public school system. It also suggests closing three Oregon prisons.
Brown said she is counting on help from the federal government to help alleviate hardship for Oregonians.
