The second phase of an affordable housing project in North Eugene is done. As KLCC’s Brian Bull reports, Bascom Village’s grand opening for 48 units was held today.
The project stems from a partnership between St. Vincent DePaul and Housing and Community Services Agency of Lane County. Jacob Fox is HACSA’s Executive Director. He says tenants are those trying to find work or move up in their current job.
“These are folks that may work in a coffee shop, or may provide daycare. And people pay a portion of their income in rent that allows them money for food and other necessities.”
Qualified tenants make 50 percent or less of the median area income. Monthly rent ranges from $438- $603.
Bud Lee is an Army veteran who’ll be moving in this weekend. He holds a gift basket, welcoming him off the streets and into Bascom Village.
“Looks like it has some pots and pans…and some cookies. It’s real nice," says Lee. "I’ve a 13-year-old son, and we’ve been homeless for a few months. My son and I need this stability.”
Last year, Bascom Village opened 53 units. Phase II cost over $10 million, with funds coming from several groups, including Oregon Housing and Community Services Agency, and the City of Eugene.
