Team USA just wrapped up impressive performances at the World Track and Field Championships in Doha. The next such event will be in Eugene in 2021. Athletes look forward to having the home field advantage for the first time.

Athletes and local and state officials packed a room of fans and media on the University of Oregon campus to kick off Oregon 21.

Team USA won the medal count in Qatar with 29. Jamaica was next with 12. Competitors are excited for the home-grown energy of the new Hayward Field. Michael Cherry won two gold medals for relay events:

Cherry: “All the athletes say, we came here so many times before they had the nice stadium, when they finish this new one, that we’re going to be there every single year. We really don’t want to go anywhere else, so we’re really going to love this.”

Cherry says he thinks the new stadium has a European feel, and that Eugene has the fan base and awareness to match.
