A new car sharing service is set to launch in Eugene Saturday.

Car2Go will offer 50 eco-friendly Smart Cars for shared use within 10 square miles of downtown Eugene. The company is owned by automotive giant Daimler AG. Members of Car2Go can find a vehicle by accessing an app on their smart phone or tablet. Ken Hills is a location manager for Car 2 Go. He says the service has been operating successfully out of Portland since 2012.

Hills: “When we looked across the state as far as the next place we wanted to be. Eugene just seemed like an obvious choice. Definitely with the environmental attitude that people have here and, you know, having the University here was also a big plus. It just seemed to be a logical move for us.”

Car 2 Go operates differently from Uber, a ridesharing service. Uber is facing criticism for operating without requiring drivers to obtain special taxi licenses.

Carsharing services don’t adhere to the same regulations.
