The largest convention of comic book lovers happens over the summer in San Diego. But Eugene has its own version of Comic Con this weekend at the Lane Events Center.

A Comic Con features artists, writers, different items from pop culture, and panels with celebrities. People often dress up in costume—sometimes referred to as cosplay—as their favorite characters from movies, books, or video games.

That's according to event spokesperson Ryan May.

May: "Basically it's just a way for people that are into pop culture, science fiction, and comic books to get together, dress up, cosplay, have a good time, and it's very family and just a lot of fun."

May says last year was the first Eugene Comic Con and organizers were surprised by the turnout. So they've expanded the floor space and made it a three day event.

He says attendees can expect celebrity guests like Butch Patrick from the Munsters and Deep Roy who appeared in Star Wars and Star Trek.

Eugene Comic Con kicks off Friday at 2 p.m. at the Lane Events Center.
