Small cities like Veneta may not have the established and concentrated business scene that larger places like Eugene or Salem have, but that’s not stopping civic planners. KLCC’s Brian Bull reports on a “pop up” retail district launching this weekend.

Three businesses will be set up in mobile shipping pods alongside Veneta’s farmer’s market on 3rd and Broadway.  They include an artisan soap maker, a food producer, and a graphics shop.  They’ll be featured every Saturday and Wednesday through mid-September.

“The focus here recently has been to create a culture of entrepreneurship," Ric Ingham, Veneta's City Administrator, tells KLCC.

"Try and encourage businesses that are maybe already working out of their homes, something that they’ve sold at holiday bazaars or what-not.   Really try to get those to a point where it’s a viable business.

"Maybe even get them to a point where they’re ready to occupy a storefront.”

The pop-up initiative was funded in part by a $35,000 grant provided by the State of Oregon.
