The World Athletics Championships will come to the United States for the first time in 2022. With just under a year until the 10-day competition at Hayward Field in Eugene, preparations are speeding up.
In addition to 2,000 athletes and about 25,000 spectators, officials expect delegations and media from over 200 countries. Andy Vobora with Travel Lane County says in anticipation, they’re rolling out World Champion Host trainings this fall.
He told KLCC, “We want our front-line employees from the front desk clerks at hotels, to staff at restaurants, cab drivers, Uber drivers, anybody that’s going to come in contact with the public to have some tools that will just make them better hosts.”
Track and field fans are making travel plans to Eugene, now that tickets are on sale for the event. Vobora said they’re also working on housing, transportation, and the fan festival, which will be held at the new Downtown Riverfront Park. The venue will feel different than the recent Olympic Trials, he said, because athletes will stay together in a "village" of dorms on campus.
