Fire conditions are HIGH to EXTREME across much of Oregon. With the Labor Day weekend upon us and people antsy to get outdoors—officials are stressing fire prevention messages.
Jim Gersbach is with the Oregon Department of Forestry. He said “you know the firefighters have been very busy in August. A lot of them are very tired—a lot of strain on the system. The last thing we need is for people to inadvertently start new fires this weekend.”
Gersbach said if you’re going to be towing anything - don’t allow chains to drag behind. This can spark a fire on the side of the road.
Never toss lit cigarettes. Smokers are advised to always have “butt cans” or ashtrays.
And don’t just pull off and park on tall, dry grass (aka: yard parker.) The hot undercarriage of a car or truck could easily kindle a fire.
