Lane County Public Health officials have taken several complaints -- about possible fraudulent calls from people posing as COVID-19 contact tracers. There are specific ways to identify potential phone scams.
If you have been linked to a known COVID-19 case, you’ll be hearing from a contact tracer. And more likely than not, you won’t be expecting their call.
Public Health’s Jason Davis has some pointers to consider before giving any information over the phone. He said all Lane County public health contacts come from a (541) area code. Furthermore--
“Our contact tracers will never ask you for your social security number. Our contact tracers will never ask you for your immigration status,” and Davis insisted. “Our contact tracers will never ask you for any financial information whatsoever.”
Davis said if you think you are receiving a fraudulent call, hang up immediately. You can then dial the main line (541-682-4041) for Lane County Public Health and be connected directly to a contact tracer on duty.
