The HIV Alliance launched a “no-contact” STI testing program Monday in Roseburg as a response to the coronavirus pandemic. The organization’s goal is to continue providing sexual health services while protecting its clients and staff.
Dane Zahner, Harm Reduction Manager for HIV Alliance, said the Oregon Health Authority has not released data indicating a decrease in STI cases due to physical distancing. He said the no-touch program is critical for Douglas County residents to get tested and prevent STI transmission.
“We’ve been doing this in Eugene, and it’s been very successful,” said Zahner. “It’s really exciting that we’re able to offer this in Douglas County. In the rural settings, the opportunity is a little bit more limited, so offering another option for our clients is super beneficial.”
According to Zahner, all clients have to do is consult with a registered nurse online, then pick up a testing kit at the Roseburg office. The STI test can be self-administered at home and returned to the HIV Alliance for lab testing.
