More Affordable Housing In Eugene-Springfield To Come, As Pandemic Recession Continues

The head of an affordable housing agency in Lane County says it’s an "exciting time" for them.

Jacob Fox is Executive Director for Homes for Good. He said wait lists are in progress for the Market District Commons, a 50-unit apartment complex for low-income residents in the downtown. He added there are four other developments in progress.

“Three of those are in Eugene. And then we have a 70-unit apartment community that’s under construction in Springfield," explained Fox.  "All of our construction projects have not been delayed. So over the next year, those 224 units of housing will become available to community members.”

Fox says the pandemic’s disruption on jobs and the economy has certainly driven up demand.

Lane County’s unemployment rate for May was 14.7 %.
