The Eugene City Council voted 5 to 2 Monday to refer a city auditor proposal to the May 15th ballot. Now, voters will have two competing measures to choose from.
The city-referred measure was drafted in reaction to an auditor proposal created by a group called ElectedAuditor4CityAccountability. Councilor Chris Pryor voted for the measure at Monday’s meeting, even though he said he’d have liked a different process.
Pryor: “I think having the additional aspects of performance auditing as a way of providing information and helping to improve I think is a valuable thing to do but I wouldn’t have done it this way.”
The city-referred proposal would create a performance auditor position that is appointed and overseen by council. It was initially presented by a group called Citizens for Sensible Oversight.
The other measure, 20-283, would establish an independent, elected city auditor. Its supporters say the competing measure is a cynical attempt to confuse voters and prevent the creation of any city auditor.
