While Eugene’s City Manager is retiring next month, Jon Ruiz says he’s not going away and plans to keep involved with local initiatives.
With riverfront development, the Fifth Street Market Expansion, and preparations for the 2021 IAAF World Championships all underway, it seems like a strange time to step down. But Jon Ruiz says it’s actually a great time.
“There’s a great foundation built," Ruiz tells KLCC. "And I think to take it into the next phase is going to take somebody that’ll be here three to five years and have some real consistency of leadership.
"So for me, having gotten it to this place feels really good.”
Ruiz says he wants to help Eugene tackle homelessness, and continue efforts like early literacy and supporting at-risk youth. He adds his time as an Army Colonel helped him work with a variety of people and to develop strategies.
Ruiz’s last day is October 18th. Public Works Director Sarah Medary will serve as interim City Manager until a permanent successor is hired.
