After Fire, McKenzie School Board Says It's Not The Time For a Bond

The McKenzie School Board is asking people to vote no on a bond measure to improve district facilities.

Measure 20-313was placed on the ballot before the Holiday Farm fire, which burned more than 400 homes and damaged many others in the McKenzie River Valley. At their meeting last week, the McKenzie School Board approved a resolution, read by board chair Tim Halloran:

“The school board acknowledges and understands that at this time, requesting $15,215,000 general obligation bond and indebtedness from the voters is inappropriate and if possible delay the school bond measure to a future election at a time when the McKenzie River community is recovering from the Holiday Farm Fire.”

If passed, measure 20-313 would add an estimated $1.96 per $1000 assessed value for homeowners. But, with the loss of property value due to the fire, that rate could be more costly. The district had sought matching grant funding from the state to supplement the bond for a new elementary school and other building improvements.
