More than $235,000 in federal money has been awarded to a Eugene non-profit. As KLCC’s Brian Bull reports, this will help support what’s called “high barrier” housing residents.
The money comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development ‘s Resident Opportunity and Self Sufficiency Service Coordinators Program. It’s a grant that Eugene-based Homes for Good has received for more than a decade.
Executive Director Jacob Fox says this helps residents in federally-subsidized housing connect with support services if they’re dealing with significant mental or physical health challenges.
“Recently our resident services coordinator jumped in to help an elderly man who had some hoarding issues going on in his unit," recalls Fox.
"The resident services coordinator worked closely with property management and other community-based partners and help that person reduce the hoarding in his unit to a level that met the lease guidelines, so we were able to prevent an eviction.”
Fox says this funding is important because it keeps many high barrier people from being evicted, and likely ending up on the streets.
