City Hall Gallery Artist Reception for Yvonne Stubbs

City Hall Gallery Artist Reception for Yvonne Stubbs

In “Bloodlines: A Personal Journey Through Art, Memory and Heritage,” Stubbs traces untold stories and memories of descendants from the Freedmen of the Choctaw and Chickasaw Nations. The multidisciplinary artist integrates these stories from her family legacy into a body of artworks that span a spectrum of mediums, including ceramics, paintings, collage, fiber art and mixed media.

Born and raised in Portland, Stubbs holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and sculpture and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Oregon. Her work is inspired by her mother, a Vanport flood survivor, and her grandparents, Black Freedmen from Oklahoma with roots in both African and Native cultures, and their experiences on reservations and in the shipyards of Portland and Alaska.

“My work is rooted in family history, community and the rich, often hidden stories of the African American and Native American experiences,” Stubbs said. “Through painting, sculpture, song and storytelling, I explore themes of resilience, beauty and cultural pride.”

The exhibition will open to the public at City Hall Gallery (500 E. 4th Ave.) beginning with an artist reception 2-4 p.m. Sept. 12. It can be viewed 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday through Feb. 6.
