Work Begins On Civic Park

Karen Richards

Work has begun at the Civic Stadium site on Amazon Parkway in South Eugene. The historic stadium, destroyed by fire in 2015, will become Civic Park, a recreation complex.

Today it's only a forklift moving fencing on the grounds of the old Civic Stadium. In the next couple of weeks, larger machinery will begin work, ahead of the October 7th ceremonial ground breaking.

Webber: “Anybody driving by will probably see a lot of equipment starting to show up and supplies. And preliminary work, earth work mostly.”

Nancy Webber is Executive Director of the nonprofit Eugene Civic Alliance. She says construction of the fields and buildings, including KIDSPORTS offices, will take 18 months. But first, they need a flat surface:

Webber: “If you stand in center field right now it's about a five degree difference between that and the pitcher's mound and then down from there to home plate.”

Webber says Eugene Civic Alliance has raised over 22 million dollars for phase one. They continue to fundraise for the grandstand, the second phase of the project.

Details about Civic Park, and the groundbreaking on October 7th, are on the Eugene Civic Alliance website, here
