Frankenstein: Playing with Fire

Frankenstein: Playing with Fire

University Theatre presents Frankenstein: Playing with Fire by Barbara Field, adapted from Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein, directed by University of Oregon Professor Michael Malek Najjar. The production runs Nov 8, 9, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23 at 7:30 p.m. and November 17 and 24 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hope Theatre, Miller Theatre Complex, University of Oregon. Tickets are $10 for Adults, $8.00 for Non-UO Students, $8.00 for UO Faculty and Staff with valid ID, and $8.00 for Youth under 18 (with the purchase of an Adult ticket). Tickets are free for all UO Students. At the North Pole, Victor Frankenstein has finally caught up with his Creature with the intent of killing him. Before he does so, the Creature asks, “Why did you make me?” This simple question leads to a complex catechism that takes Frankenstein and the Creature back in time to Victor’s childhood, his education, his desire to create life, and the horrors the Creature wrought upon him. Less a faithful adaptation of Mary Shelley’s story, and more a “response to the novel,” Barbara Field’s Frankenstein: Playing with Fire is a stirring dramatic interpretation of the haunting 19th century masterpiece, produced twice by The Guthrie Theatre. Staged by University Theatre faculty and students, this production examines the dark interior of humanity’s quest for immortality, and the dangers of scientific experimentation without consideration of the consequences.
