Oregon DMV says to watch out for a scam involving 'Pay Now' texts or emails

The Oregon DMV warns of a scam going around that involves emails or text messages that appear to be from the agency, telling people to "Pay Now" and click a link.

Officials say these messages are not legitimate and they do not come from Oregon DMV. They are fake messages meant to get the recipient to click on a link to provide personal information or send money. The Oregon DMV says it would never ask for personal information or a payment through an unsolicited text, email or phone call.

And DMV transactions should only be completed online at the DMV website or in person at a DMV office.

More from DMV regarding scams:

How to protect yourself

  • Don't click links. If you receive a text about unpaid tolls, do not click on any links or provide any information.
  • Be cautious of suspicious texts. Be wary of any text message that demands immediate action or asks for personal information or payment.
  • Delete the text and block the number to prevent further potential harm.
  • Report scams and suspicious communications to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. It will help to include the phone number from which the text originated, and any website listed within the text.

If you click a link or provide your information

  • Secure your personal information and financial accounts.
  • Dispute any unfamiliar charges.
