I-5 is now open near the Oregon-California border.
UPDATE Monday, 9:15am: Caltrans- CHP report I-5 open in California but expect single lane traffic through the Delta fire zone. Expect delays and congestion.
Original story: A stretch of Interstate 5 near the California-Oregon border remains closed Monday morning as crews try to tame a wildfire roaring along the roadway, forcing truckers and other motorists to take lengthy detours.
The Delta Fire shut down 45 miles of I-5 in California last Wednesday and is still burning out of control. The closure is in effect between Northbound Interstate 5 at Riverview Drive and Southbound Interstate 5 at Flume Creek Road.
The fire has spread to the north and northwest, west of the I-5 corridor and to the northeast and southeast of I-5.
California State Department of Transportation officials say flames have destroyed thousands of trees — some 70 feet tall — that could fall onto the roadway. It has scorched 40,903 acres and is 5 percent contained. The fire is listed as human caused, but additional details have not been released.
