The Milepost 97 fire near Canyonville continues to grow, and as of Saturday morning had burned just under 9,000 acres.
The Douglas County Sherriff issued Level 1 “Ready” evacuation orders for all residences on the west side of the freeway between Interstate mileposts 88-83. A Level 1 "Ready" notice is also in effect for all residences off of Upper Cow Creek Road starting at I-5 milepost 88, east to the base of Galesville Dam. Three homes in the Richie Rd. area remain under a Level 3 or "Go" evacuation notice, meaning residents should leave.

Fire officials say 15 helicopters are currently assigned to the fire along with a host of large air tankers and smaller single engine air tankers. Close to 900 firefighters are currently assigned to the fire that are split into day and night shift operations.
The fire began Wednesday, July 24th. Officials believe an illegal campfire may have started the blaze.

A driver heading north on I-5 encounters smoke about 11 miles South of Canyonville.
TRAFFIC UPDATE Saturday, July 27, 9:30am: Southbound Interstate 5 is limited to a single lane from milepost 97-95, about two miles south of Canyonville. The lane closure will allow fire crews to clear debris from the side of the road. Watch for possible congestion and delays. Watch for smoky conditions, especially at night. The northbound and southbound off-ramps at Exit 95 (Canyon Creek) remain closed.
