Oregon Farmers More Likely To Sell Directly To Consumers

A new study shows Oregon farmers are more likely to sell product directly to consumers compared to other states. The Census of Agriculture says Oregon ranks 6th in the nation with more than 6,000 farms reporting direct-to-consumer sales. State Board of Agriculture member Barbara Boyer isn't surprised by the findings.

Boyer: "The opportunities for people to buy direct, the growth has been exponential in farmers markets, CSA's, in all of those areas. We've been reaching into new markets, reaching new people, reaching suburban audiences that didn't have access before, and all that equal more opportunities for more farmers."

Boyer started the McMinnville Farmers Market in 2001 with 600 shoppers. In 2012, there were more than 4,000.
