Bascom Village Affordable Housing Begins Phase Two

Karen Richards

Officials broke ground on a new affordable housing complex in north Eugene today (Monday). Phase two of Bascom Village will be sure to fill up quickly.

Near County Farm Road and Coburg Road, earth movers clear the ground for the second half of the Bascom Village community, which will have 48 units.

Across the street, carpenters and landscapers add final touches to the initial homes. Nora Cronin is with St. Vincent de Paul. She says demand for Phase One was huge:

Cronin: “We got a large number of people that were interested in the project. So we’re identifying the tenants that will be moving in, we’re still going through that, and we should be ready to move them in by the end of October, or early November.”

To qualify, tenants must make less than 50% of the median area income and pass a background check. Jacob Fox with the Housing and Community Services Agency of Lane County expects the rest of the apartments to fill quickly:

Fox: “There’s a documented need in our community for many more affordable housing units than we’re currently able to provide.”

Phase Two of Bascom Village is scheduled to be complete in October, 2016.
