Oregon Ranks Amongst Top States For Organic Exports

Oregon ranks eighth in the nation for certified organic farms according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. A recently released survey is showing expanded growth and an international interest in organic exports.

The survey released by the USDA says there are 525 certified organic farms, with more than 204,000 acres producing organic goods. Oregon Department of Agriculture Spokeswoman Lindsay Eng says the state's exports don't just stay in the U.S.

Eng: “Certainly, our Asian countries have big organic markets as well. So we do a lot of export to Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, our strong Asian trading partners.”

Eng says the state has expanded the selection of organic crops produced, which is being fueled by greater demand for organic food worldwide.

Eng: “The more that people see organic agriculture being incorporated into all of AG and being incorporated not just in the natural food section, or they don’t have to go to a different store– we see a lot of our regional retailers incorporating it throughout the store.”

Given the rise in organic farming, it is plausible to assume traditional farmers might be at odds with organic growers. But according to Eng, that's not the case.
