City Club: Where the Jobs Are

Recorded on: July 8th, 2016

Air Date: July 11th, 2016

Speakers:

  • Kim Thompson: Lane County Workforce Analyst, Oregon Employment Research Div.
  • Jennifer Adams: Director of Human Resources, Bulk Handling Systems
  • Becky DeWitt: Human Resource Manager, City of Eugene

Coordinator:  Mary Leighton

As new graduates stride out into the workforce, what opportunities might they see right here in Lane County? When career wanderlust besets older adults, where might they look for new places to invest their skills in the local economy, without having to move away? In this program, we will learn about the economic sectors that have remained robust through the ups and downs of markets and those that are emerging due to the creative forces that animate entrepreneurs.

Kim Thompson’s main priority in the Oregon Employment Department is tracking workforce activity. She has been a major developer of the State of the Workforce Report for several years. Using data released very recently, she will provide an overview of the size and nature of the major sectors of the regional economy, the places where worker replacement and new jobs offer great possibilities, and some new niches that will appeal to a few good people.

Jennifer Adams will explain what BHS does and sketch the array of positions involved in its work. BHS is one of only four places in the US engaged in its particular mission, and it represents the sturdy regional manufacturing sector.

Becky DeWitt will describe the broad spectrum of jobs that keep our City operational. The City of Eugene is not just about elected officials, but includes employees at every level of education and skill. Owing to the presence of the state’s flagship university and the main offices of local and county agencies, government provides a large chunk of local employment.
