Self-Serve Gas And Insurance Grace Periods Both Extended In Oregon

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic means Oregonians could be pumping their own gas a little longer. And they’ll also get a break in paying their insurance premiums.

Some gas station owners requested in March that Oregon temporarily allow self-serve gas statewide as a way to keep gas station employees safe. The Oregon Fire Marshal granted that request, and now says the change will be in effect through at least May 9. It’s the second extension of the policy.

It comes as gas prices are below $2/gallon in some parts of Oregon due to a reduction in demand, as more people work from home and have fewer leisure options that require leaving the house.

Separately, the Oregon Department of Consumer and Business Services says it’s extending through May 23 the ban on insurance companies canceling policies due to a lack of payment. That means Oregonians who are facing financial hardships due to the coronavirus can hold off on paying their premiums. A spokesperson for the agency recommends consumers contact their insurance company to let them know they can’t pay right now.
