Memorial Day: Remembering Those Who Died For Their Country

While Memorial Day means no work or school for most people, it's also a time to remember those who have served their country. On Memorial Day, there's a ceremony at the Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs.

Families and friends will gather at the Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs in Salem at the Afghan-Iraqi Freedom Memorial. In the annual ceremony, the names of two Oregon soldiers will be added to the wall. The department's Director, Cameron Smith, says they were killed in Afghanistan last year.

Smith: "Private First Class Cody Patterson, who was from the Philomath-Corvallis area and then Army Specialist John A. Pelham from the Beaverton-Portland area. Two amazing, strong, athletic individuals who no doubt would have come back and thrived in our community and continued their leadership after their service. It's very hard for their families and the community to reconcile that loss in service for all of us."

Their names will be added to the memorial of the Oregon soldiers who lost their lives in Iraq or Afghanistan. The 141 names will be read aloud during the ceremony.
