2021 Awards

KLCC Wins Multiple 2021 NAJA Awards, Sweeps Features Category

KLCC dominated one category this year: Professional Division III Radio/Podcast Best Feature Story. First place was for “2020 Finds Indigenous Nations Preparing for Wildfires and COVID-19”, second place was for “New Wave of Social Justice Finds Black and Indigenous Activists United,”, and third place was for “Following Story Pole Controversy, Ritz Saunas Now Gifted with Tlingit Artist.

All winning entries were by KLCC reporter Brian Bull, and edited by KLCC news director Rachael McDonald.

2020 Awards

KLCC Wins Big In 2020 NAJA Awards

KLCC won first place in the “Best Coverage of Native America” category for Radio/Podcast for “Borders, Migration, and Belonging: Native Voices”. Supported by the University of Oregon’s Wayne Morse Center for Law and Politics, this in-depth series explored issues important to Indigenous communities in the state, including tribes’ timber practices, the return of Indian artifacts, cultivating interest in traditional foods, and the evolution of the Native American art scene. Reporters Brian Bull and Karen Richards were reporters for the series; Rachael McDonald was primary editor.

Richards also swept Associate Division III for Radio/Podcast, winning first, second, and third place awards for Best Feature Story. Her submissions were also from the Wayne Morse Series: “Indigenous Artists Work for Recognition and Change”; “Native Oregon History Goes Public”; and “Native Oregon Artifacts Coming Home.”

Bull won a second place award in Professional Division III for Radio/Podcast, for his feature, “Nearly Two Years’ Work by Native Carvers Yields Totem Pole for Sheldon High.”

2019 Awards

KLCC’S Brian Bull was recognized with 2 NAJA Awards. In Professional Division III.

He won 3rd place for Radio/ Podcast – Best Feature Story for For Two Spirits, An Opportunity To Gain Acceptance Across Indian Country

And he won 2nd place for Radio / Podcast – Best News Story for Lowly Lamprey’s Numbers Focus of Tribes, Conservation Groups

KLCC's Karen Richards was given 2 NAJA awards in Associate Division III Radio - Podcast

She won 1st Place for Ancient Languages Being Nudged Awake, and 3rd Place in the same category for Tribal Business on Cusp of Change.

2017 Award

KLCC's Brian Bull took the 3rd place award for "Radio - Best News Story" for:
Eugene Tribal Ceremones Herald Return of Totem Poles

Brian competed against the daily national news program, "National Native News," which took 1st and 2nd place.
