The city of Eugene is facing an $11.5 million shortfall. Officials have proposed eliminating funding for animal services to help close the gap.
In an announcement Wednesday, Greenhill Humane Society, which has a contract to provide those services for Eugene, said defunding will create serious safety issues.
The non-profit said Eugene won't have the means to investigate animal neglect complaints, enforce rabies mandates or handle stray or dangerous animals brought by the police, or Eugene residents.
Greenhill is calling on the public to ask the city council to include funding for animal services in next year’s budget.
