UO Veterans Help Remodel Eugene Home

Desmond O'Boyle

A group of about 20 University of Oregon veterans volunteered their time and construction skills Saturday to help with a Veterans Housing project in Eugene.

The Veterans Housing Project is a collaborative effort comprised of organizations and volunteers to help military men and women transition back into the community after deployment. Saturday's project, located on Jefferson Street, included building a deck and landscaping work. U of O Veteran Program Coordinator Michael Tieman wishes there were more non-veterans to help out.

Tieman: "You know I got sign-up sheets at the U of O from the student body. I got 60 names on those lists of people I call u p when stuff like this happens. And there's no one here on that volunteer list, it's all student veterans. So, for me it's very important for the community to consistently show support for student veterans. To put the uniform on and put the flag on your arm and go anywhere in the world says a lot about someone's character. And I think that deserves a bit of respect."

Funding for the Jefferson Street house came from a $75,000 grant from The Home Depot Foundation. Additional collaboration included The City of Eugene, St. Vincent de Paul, and the Doyle and Donna Shepherd Foundation. If you are a Veteran, or know a veteran you think qualifies for assisted housing, contact St. Vincent DePaul or visit
