Working Together on the BEST Outcomes for Kids

This program will explain how Eugene School District 4J and community partners use research-based approaches to raise up our most vulnerable elementary, middle school students and ensure a college going culture with teens who might otherwise struggle to make sense of high school and higher education.

We will hear about BEST, “Boosting and Enriching Students Today,” and AVID, “Advancement Via Individual Determination." Afterschool program leaders Raquel Gwynn, Sharon Tabor, and Peter Chavannes will describe BEST, a program that uses a combination of grant funding and resources of the district, the City of Eugene, and groups such as the Eugene Symphony to increase student achievement and provide enrichment activities that the improve the learning trajectory for 500 young people.  Randy Bernstein, principal of SEHS, will describe how AVID enables students to realize college dreams by establishing the foundations beginning in middle school and continuing through twelfth grade.
