2015 Eugene Turtle Awards

Recorded on: June 5th, 2015

Air Date: June 8th, 2015

Every year, the City Club of Eugene honors local individuals with Turtle Awards. The award ceremony showers appreciation on citizens who “stick their neck out” for the good of the community. The 2015 awards are going to Colt Gill and George Russell, community leaders who who give graciously of their time.

Colt Gill, superintendent of the Bethel School District, has not only been a leader in the Bethel community but also been a strong voice among Oregon’s other school superintendents on issues of equity in matters of gender, ethnicity, and economic. He has advocated for affordable housing, supported a Sponsors housing project for ex-offenders, and been a leader of United Way. Greg Rikhoff, Ron Chase, and Bill Morrisette will present Gill’s award.

George Russell, former superintendent of Eugene School District 4J, has for decades been a quiet but important behind-the-scenes leader for Eugene schools. He has served as a mentor and advisor to other community leaders. Local organizations have benefited from Russell’s involvement with their boards, including Lane ShelterCare, Looking Glass, and the Center for Leadership and Ethics. Carmen Urbina and Barb Bellamy will present Russell’s award.
