The University of Oregon won their home football opener on Saturday, defeating Stanford 35-14.
Ducks quarterback Tyler Shough threw for 227 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score. Shough completed 17 of 26 passes with one interception, and ran for 85 yards. CJ Verdell had 20 carries for 105 yards and one touchdown for the Ducks.
After the game, Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said it was a great performance by all, especially after such a long break from playing. He said “they’re not happy unless they completely and utterly dominate an opponent and I wanted to make sure they knew that we are super proud of them, excited for them, because they haven’t played in such a long time. When you win a football game- winning is hard- and to be able to bring it all together like they did in the second half-- it’s just a great start.”
Stanford kicker Jet Toner missed all four of his field goal attempts for the Cardinal.
Before the game Stanford announced that starting quarterback Davis Mills was unavailable. Receiver Connor Wedington and defensive end Trey LaBounty were also listed as unavailable because of COVID-19 testing results and contact tracing protocols. While Stanford did not specify whether the players had tested positive, Wedington said on Twitter that he tested negative.
The Ducks came in to the shortened season ranked No. 12. They face Washington State on the road Nov. 14.
