Lionshead Fire: Wilderness Area Visitors Asked To "Promptly Leave"

Inciweb

The Lionshead Fire burning on the Warm Springs Reservation has grown to 14,967 acres, prompting the U.S. Forest Service to close a large portion of the Mount Jefferson Wilderness Area. This includes a 40-mile stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail. Jefferson Park and Pamelia Lake areas are also closed.

The Willamette National Forest used their social media accounts Saturday evening to ask all visitors to the Mount Jefferson Wilderness to “promptly leave in a calm and orderly fashion.” In a Facebook post, the WNF said wilderness rangers from the Detroit Ranger District, with assistance from the Marion and Linn County Sheriffs Offices, were conducting sweeps, including along the Pacific Crest Trail, to make visitors aware of the public safety concerns.

To the north of Mount Jefferson, visitors to the Olallie Lake area were asked to evacuate on Saturday.

The Lionshead fire is 31% contained.

The P-515 Fire is also burning on the Warm Springs Reservation. As of Saturday, that fire had burned 4,609 acres and was 95% contained.

In other fires burning around the state, the White River Fire burning on the Mt. Hood National Forest has burned 17,379 acres and is 50% contained.

The Beachie Creek Fire burning in the Opal Creek Wilderness near Detroit grew to 379 acres on Saturday.

Inciwebreports 15 wildfires burning in Oregon.
