A man who fell into the ocean at Devils Churn on Thursday in Lincoln County has been presumed dead by the Oregon State Police.

In a press release sent on Thursday, OSP said Steve Allen, a 67-year-old from Walnut Creek, CA, had attempted to jump across Devils Churn before falling. Nearby visitors had tried to rescue Allen from the water, but were unsuccessful.

Allen was reportedly observed by rescue agencies as unresponsive prior to losing sight of him. The U.S. Coast Guard and other responding agencies ended their search around 6:40 p.m. last night, according to the release.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, the Newport Fire Department, the Yachats Fire and Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard assisted OSP.
