Reaching Herd Immunity In Lane Co. Requires Greater Access To Small Vax Sites

Tiffany Eckert

Now that Lane County has achieved Low Risk status for business restrictions, Public Health has shifted the goal. Officials say now it’s about reaching “herd immunity” in order to protect everyone. The focus is on vaccine access.

According to health officials, just under 58% of the "entire population" of Lane County has been vaccinated against COVID-19. Public Health continues to shoot for the 70% mark where it is believed community immunity will begin to beat back the virus.

How are we going to do that? Spokesperson Jason Davis said they’ve moved away from mass vax efforts to mobile and pop-up clinics—as many as 20 a week, countywide.

“Just make that vaccine as easy to obtain as possible," he said. "We’ve heard loud and clear that access remains one of the big issues for folks in terms of why they’re not getting the vaccine.”

Lane County Public Health officials say the lack of access to the vaccine is the main reason reported for not being vaccinated. Mobile and pop up clinics seek to remedy this.

In addition to the numerous community-based sites and steady, ample vaccine stock at federal partner pharmacies, Davis said plans are underway to hold mobile vax clinics at several summer time events and venues. This includes looking to set up a vax event on or near the site of the Olympic Trials at Hayward Field in Eugene.
