Volunteers collected 26,815 pounds of litter and marine debris from Oregon’s coast, rivers, and neighborhoods during SOLVE's 38th annual Beach and Riverside Cleanup this year.

More than 100 projects have taken place with 2,000 volunteers helping. The event, hosted by SOLVE and their partner the Oregon Lottery, started on Sept. 18 and will conclude on Oct. 3. Volunteers and SOLVE aim to reduce pollution especially when it poses a risk to surrounding environments, wildlife, and water.

One of the project completed in Portland this year included the collection of more than 1,200 pounds of litter. It took volunteers just two hours to accumulate items that included crab pots, couches, and rafting gear. The organization says the items may have ended up in the Willamette River.

Another project on the coast in Nehalem Bay, collected more than 400 pounds of litter and marine debris.
