This summer University of Oregon hosts its first international soccer match. In July teams from France and Italy will face off for a chance to win the 2016 International Champions Cup.
Fans will be celebrating goals instead of touchdowns at Autzen Stadium.
Mike Duncan is with U of O Athletics. He says it benefits Eugene to hold events with the potential to draw people from all around the country.
Duncan: “Anytime that we’re able to bring international events or big entertainment events, whether it be the Olympic Trials, whether it be a sold out concert at Matthew Knight Arena, all those things I think add to the quality of life.”
Duncan says Autzen needs a slight renovation for the match—organizers for the game are bringing natural grass to replace the turf.
The International Champions Cup is a series of matches played between 10 teams worldwide. Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain face Italy’s F.C. International team on July 24th in Eugene.
Tickets are available to the public on April 5th.
