Pac-12 Conference Says Athletes Can Begin In-Person Workouts In June

Pac-12 Conference

The Pac-12 Conference has announced that voluntary, in-person athletic workouts for all sports can begin as early as mid-June.

Student athletes have not been able to practice or compete since the NCAA suspended all sports back in March. The Pac-12’s decision to allow workouts beginning June 15th is subject to the discretion of each individual campus and must be within state guidelines.

The Pac-12 Conference has established guidelines for student athletes returning to practice and the protocol response to infection/ presumed infection.

Earlier this month University of Oregon Athletic Director Rob Mullens said they were looking at several models of what a return to sports could look like for the Ducks. On a media call on May 15th, Mullens said University officials have been "focusing with our doctors and medical experts in creating a safe environment for student athletes, and obviously when we have all those protocols, we’ll share them with the coaches, with the student athletes, and make sure everybody is comfortable with them.”

Large gatherings are currently still restricted under Gov. Kate Brown’s executive order, and she has suggested that sports events should be canceled or heavily modified through the end of September.

As counties move through Oregon’s three phase re-opening plan larger gatherings could be permitted, allowing athletes to begin team practices for fall sports competitions.

In addition to Oregon's two Pac-12 colleges (Oregon State University and Univerity of Oregon), the Pac-12 Conference includes schools in Washington, Utah, Arizona, Colorado and California.
