KIDSPORTS Demonstrates How to Pivot

Karen Richards

No doubt, the pivot is one of the skills traditionally taught at KIDSPORTS summer camps. Now housed in a new facility at 20th and Willamette in Eugene, KIDSPORTS itself is demonstrating some savvy lateral moves.

About 80 kids in groups of 10 with colorful, matching shirts play on the fresh surfaces at KIDSPORTS. Campers don’t learn traditional team-based sports here, but rotate between stations of skills and agility.

“A sports camp like this was never something in the plans," said AJ Gaulton, the Business Development Director. "So this is a pivot that we’re having to do amidst the pandemic.”

Gaulton said some families were hesitant to participate due to COVID-19 concerns, but all the slots filled. Civic Alliance dipped into a loan in order to open. Gaulton said, “We are just trying to finish our Phase One fundraising and construction, so we don’t necessarily have a timeline of that Phase Two grandstand and press box, but it is still in the plans.”

Gaulton said as another new venture, the field house can host community groups to bring in revenue.
