Five Oregon Football Players Test Positive For COVID-19

Oregon Athletics

Five University of Oregon football players tested positive for COVID-19 Saturday. University officials say all five student-athletes are symptom-free.

Head Coach Mario Cristobal says the players “are all in isolation and working with the medical staff, local health to make sure that all protocol is followed. It has been to the T since the beginning. This is the first time we’ve had positive antigen tests in our program. And also working with local health and our medical team with the contact tracing stuff which is a little bit more through and I know they take a deeper dive into that.”

After the positive test results, Saturday’s scrimmage was canceled. Cristobal says the entire team was slated to be tested Sunday, as is standard protocol, and they will reevaluate the situation.

In August the Pac-12 announced football would not be played in 2020, before reversing course in September and announcing an abbreviated conference-only schedule.

In announcing the schedules in early October, Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott said the return to football competition will “continue to place the health and safety of our student-athletes and all those connected to Pac-12 football as the highest priority.”

Oregon is scheduled to begin their season on November 7th, hosting Stanford.
