The Eugene Emeralds baseball team has received an award in recognition of their community involvement.
The Emeralds are the 2020 recipients of the Short-Season Freitas award- an honor that’s bestowed by Baseball America to recognize franchises for their community involvement, long-term business success and consistent operational excellence.
The Ems earned the award for their efforts in supporting the local community during the coronavirus pandemic and in the ongoing efforts to help survivors of this year’s wildfires.
Over the past eight months the organization has held blood drives, collected and distributed personal protective equipment, and in response to the wildfires, they helped get food, water, and supplies to evacuees and even used their food trucks to to cook meals for community members.
The Emeralds, the Class A Short-Season affiliate of the Chicago Cubs and 2018 Northwest League Champions, had their 2020 season canceled and haven’t played a game at home since August, 2019.
